A digital generation learns differently

The next generation of soldiers did not grow up with manuals and classroom lectures.

They grew up with games, simulations, and real-time feedback. That shapes how they learn and what they expect from training.

When traditional formats lose traction

Classroom-based instruction still has its place. But its limitations are becoming more visible.

Across defence organisations, engagement in traditional setups is under pressure. Attention spans are shorter. Passive formats struggle to hold focus over time.

When the format does not match how people learn, retention drops and training becomes less effective. Knowledge is harder to translate into action, especially under pressure.

A different learning baseline

For many soldiers entering service today, interactive learning is the default.

They are used to:

  • Immediate feedback on their actions
  • Progression through tasks
  • Learning by doing, not just observing


This creates a different starting point. Learning is expected to be active, responsive, and tied to outcomes.

It also changes how mistakes are handled. Failure is part of the process, not something to avoid. That mindset is difficult to support in static or linear training formats.

Simulation fits naturally into that pattern.

Meeting people where they learn best

Digital training changes how learning is delivered. Instead of frontloading information, the focus shifts to guiding performance as it unfolds. Instruction becomes more contextual and closely linked to the task itself.

Simulation-based environments make that possible, allowing trainees to:

  • interact directly with systems
  • test decisions and see consequences
  • repeat scenarios until actions become consistent
  • build confidence before facing the same situations in reality


This brings training closer to real tasks and reduces the gap between knowing and doing.

Alignment, not add-on

Digital training is often introduced as a supplement. In practice, it aligns learning with how people already process and apply information. When the format fits, learning becomes more focused and easier to retain.

It also makes training easier to scale. The same environment can be reused, adjusted, and accessed when needed, without relying on fixed schedules or physical setups.

We don’t need to convince the next generation to use simulation. They already grew up in it.

Grounded in real use
